Here is a brief biographical sketch of Wor. Brother Francis James Norie taken from Temple Lodge, No.33 records and from local newspaper reports of his death and funeral:

"...A petition for membership of this Lodge by Affiliation was received from Francis James Norie of Holyrood House (St. Luke's) Lodge, No.44, Edinburgh, Scotland. The petitioner states he was born at Perth, Scotland, age 50, Occupation, Notary Public. The petition is accompanied by his Grand Lodge Certificate and the usual fee of $5.00. The petition is recommended by the Wor. Master W. Bro. H.F. Prevost and Secretary Bro. W.L. Dunn.

Moved by Wor. Bro. C. Dobson seconded by Wor. Bro. R.C. Fawcett that the petition be received and the usual committee appointed. Motion carried. The W. Master appointed as a committee on this petition Wor. Bros.Pitt, Dwyer and Grieg..."

“Norie – Mr. Francis James Norie passed away in his 78th year at Duncan Hospital on New Year’s Day after a long illness.


A retired lawyer, Mr. Norie had lived for almost 40 years in the district, working for many years for J.H. Whittome  & Co. Ltd. as conveyancer and accountant.


Born in Perth, Scotland on August 14, 1867, he became a barrister in Edinburgh and was a member of the Society of Writers of the Signet there.


Coming to B.C. from Scotland soon after the turn of the century, he was employed for the most part in this district. He retired some years ago.


The Rev. Canon T.M. Hughes will officiate at the funeral to-day at St. Peter’s Church, Quamichan.


Surviving him are a brother, Mr. H.A. Norie, Cowichan Station; a sister, Mrs. T.W. Todd, England; three nephews in Cowichan and one on England.”

“Norie – The funeral service for Mr. Francis James Norie, who died at Duncan Hospital on New Year’s Day, took place on Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church, Quamichan.


The Rev. Canon T.M. Hughes officiated and Mr. W.B. Clements was organist.


Pallbearers were: Messrs. Walter and Vivian Norie, R.W. Whittome, Ferguson Hoey, J.B. Green and C.F. Davie, K.C.
The body was taken to Victoria for cremation.


Mr. Norie is survived by a brother, Mr. H.A. Norie, Cowichan Station; a sister, Mrs. T.W. Todd, in England; and by six nephews and six nieces in Canada, U.S.A., Australia and the British Isles.
Davis Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.”
